Mallory Lowe Mpoka (born 1996) is a Belgian-Cameroonian artist based in Montréal whose multidisciplinary practice explores place, memory, and territory.
Drawing on archives and memorabilia, Mpoka creates spaces where the past engages in dialogue with the present. Her work explores a nomadic condition of “in-betweenness,” where multiple temporalities and spatial discontinuities intertwine, bearing witness to a transoceanic heritage connecting Africa, Europe, and North America.
Building on trajectories marked by migration and rupture, her practice investigates the relationships between cultural inheritance, memory, lineage, and environmental colonialism. In response to the fractures imposed by colonization, she develops a fluid approach in which real and imagined narratives intersect. The earth is treated as a sensitive material, situated at the crossroads of historical trauma and the potential for identity reconstruction.
Through photography, weaving, ceramics, dyeing, and installation, she develops multidisciplinary forms in which material, image, and narrative circulate between places, connecting the geographies and memories that inhabit her.
Mpoka’s work has been presented internationally, notably at Villa Romana (Italy), the National Gallery of Canada, and SAVVY Contemporary (Germany). She published her artist’s book Architecture of the Self: What Lives Within Us in winter 2024. Nominated for the Malick Sidibé Prize (2022) and the New Generation Photography Award (2025), she presents a solo exhibition at Fonderie Darling as part of the 2025 MOMENTA Biennale.

Mallory Lowe Mpoka (née en 1996) est une artiste belgo-camerounaise basée à Montréal dont la pratique multidisciplinaire explore le lieu, la mémoire et le territoire.
Puisant dans les archives et les memorabilia, Mpoka façonne des espaces où le passé dialogue avec le présent. Son œuvre explore une condition nomade de l’« entre-deux », où s’entrelacent temporalités multiples et discontinuités spatiales, témoignant d’un héritage transocéanique reliant l’Afrique, l’Europe et l’Amérique du Nord.
Dans le prolongement de trajectoires marquées par la migration et la rupture, son travail interroge les liens entre héritages culturels, mémoire, filiation et colonialisme environnemental. Face aux fractures imposées par la colonisation, elle développe une démarche fluide dans laquelle récits réels et imaginés se croisent. La terre y est envisagée comme un matériau sensible, à la croisée des traumatismes historiques et des potentialités de recomposition identitaire.
Par la photographie, le tissage, la céramique, la teinture et l’installation, elle développe des formes pluridisciplinaires où la matière, l’image et le récit deviennent vecteurs de circulation entre les lieux, reliant les géographies et les mémoires qui l'habitent.
L’œuvre de Mpoka a été présentée à l’international, notamment à la Villa Romana (Italie), au Musée des Beaux-Arts du Canada et au Savvy Contemporary (Allemagne). Elle a publié son livre d’artiste Architecture of the Self: What Lives Within Us à l’hiver 2024. Nominée pour le prix Malick Sidibé (2022) et le New Generation Photography Award (2025), elle expose en solo à la Fonderie Darling lors de la Biennale Momenta 2025.
