The Matriarch: Unravelled Threads

2021

The Matriarch: Unravelled Threads is an ongoing textile project that began during a research residency at Bandjoun Station and Villa Lena Foundation in summer 2021. Inspired by my photographic family archive and heirlooms, this body of work explores the vernacular photographic archive as a means of transitioning from the personal to collective forms of memory and legacy. This project combines several techniques, including analogue photography, screen printing, sewing and natural textile dyeing to create a body of work that reflects the diversity and complexities of African diasporic heritages.
